2014 Petit Verdot Ciel du Cheval, Red Mountain
2014 Petit Verdot Ciel du Cheval, Red Mountain

We don't do much when making a Varietal Petit Verdot. The vineyard does most of the winemaking. In 2014 we had warmth from the beginning to the end of the season. This allowed the Petit Verdot to fully develop, resulting in intense color, aroma and flavors with dusty tannins in the wine. We just needed to stay out of the way of the fruit and let it be what it was going to be. We fermented the fruit in open top fermenters and aged it in two thirds new French oak. We did nothing else.

A classic Petit Verdot -- dense in all respects. Dense color, dense aromas of black fruits, and dense flavor. The dusty tannins hang back a little, emerging with time, then gently fading with the long finish.  From beginning to end this is intense. This is a classic Petit Verdot. 93 Points, Best of Class, 2020 American Wine Society Awards.

Big chewy Petit Verdot aged nearly two years in mostly new French oak. The wine is reminiscent of a spice-box aromatically, with notes of clove, cinnamon and nutmeg, accented by rich, ripe blue fruits. It's got very sappy black and blue fruit flavours, streaks of smoke, fennel, savoury thyme, crushed pepper and charred meat.

92 pts. International Wine Report
By J. Young, August 2021.

100% Petit Verdot from Red Mountain aged for 22 months in 70% new French oak is something you don’t find too often. Deep purple with a ruby rim in the glass, this is a big, brooding wine with aggressive tannins and richly extracted black and blue fruit along with elements of dusty road, bacon fat, prunes, black fig and coffee grounds. If you are looking for a big extracted wine, high in alcohol that delivers that Red Mountain kick, this wine is for you.

19+/20, Review of Washington Wines
By Rand Sealey, March 2021

This is a gorgeous Petit Verdot. It exhibits the classic traits of a deep ruby-crimson color and perfumed aromas of blueberries, black cherries, black roses, sweet dark tobacco, lavender, juniper, violets and sweet oriental incense. On the palate, the flavors are thick, lavish and deep cored, with black and blue fruits that are infused with licorice, dark cocoa, black tea and Red Mountain calcareous earth. The saturation continues on the back with sensations of pressed fruits, mocha, crème de cassis, toasty oak (70% new French), graphite, and lanolin (“legs”) all followed by a lingering sweet-dry tannin finish.
