2014 Block One Cabernet Sauvignon Ciel du Cheval, Red Mountain
At least 95% of the grapes grown at Ciel du Cheval are sold to other wineries, mostly through long-term contracts. However, every now and then we get the opportunity use a little fruit from some of these plantings in our own winemaking. In the 2014 vintage, we had such an opportunity. Our very first block of Cabernet Sauvignon is just a little more than one half-acre in size planted on Scooteney silt-loam soil, and has a slight southern exposure. Known for producing wines with intense tannic structure, this block has played a key role in the development of Ciel du Cheval. This block was planted in 1975 as a test block as there was some doubt that Cabernet Sauvignon would make a unique wine of distinction. By 1981 it was clear that Cabernet from our site was exceptional and additional plantings of followed soon after.
In 1975, we planted the first block of Cabernet Sauvignon at Ciel du Cheval Vineyard. Generally, we sell the fruit from this planting to one of our long-time customers. But, in 2014, we kept it for ourselves. It makes a stunning, robust wine.
Aromas of leather, cedar and tobacco are followed by flavors of plum, black currant, cigar box and mocha. The wine fills the mouth persistent tannins that linger on the tip of the tongue. The finish is long and broad. 71 cases produced. 95 points Great Northwest Wine

Dark and richly intense, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Block One Ciel du Cheval wafts up with haunting aromatics, mixing sage and lavender with crushed plums and balsamic spice. It's elegant and supple, with ripe red and black fruits accentuated by nuances of sour orange. A gentle coating of tannins forms toward the close. The 2014 finishes fresh yet lightly structured, leaving a hint of sour cherry and sweet spice to linger. Drink from 2025-2035.
