2013 Syrah Ciel du Cheval, Red Mountain

The 2013 Syrah was made from a single clone of Syrah known clone as '99'.   Planted at Ciel du Cheval in 2000, this clone can trace its heritage back to Chateau Beaucastel (via Tablas Creek). Clone '99' is generally considered to produce richer more dense wines with a distinctive aromatic personality.  The grapes were fermented in open-top fermenters until dry. They were placed in a mix of barrels of different ages and types.  Three of the five barrels were new and included one American Oak barrel.  The wine was aged in the barrels for twenty-one months. it was held for an additional six months in the bottle prior to release.

Approachable now, this wine should age well for seven to ten years.

The 2013 Syrah is a deep inky purple color. The first sniff reveals spices, pepper, and licorice on top of blackberries. As the wine opens up, notes of dark chocolate and an iron streak are added to the aroma. The juicy palate shows dark fruits and spices. There is substantial lift to the flavors, providing liveliness to the wine.  The finish is long with dusty tannins. 117 Cases Produced. Learn more ...

Stephen Tanzer, Vinous (Novemebr 2015)

Full, bright medium ruby. Wild aromas of blackberry, licorice, bitter chocolate, pepper and iron. Juicy, spicy and sharply delineated; not a particularly opulent style of Syrah but boasts very good inner-mouth perfume and lift to its flavors of dark fruits, peppery herbs and menthol. I find this more classic and refined in an Old World way than the 2012 version. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and excellent length. Drink 2017-2023.
